“Paris is a bitch” is a short story all of roughly 40 pages by crime-fiction author “Barry Eisler”. I find that if you haven’t yet read anything by Barry Eisler yet, this would be a great place to start. Its generally fast paced, well described, has major characters John Rain (contract killer/assassin) and Delilah (Mossad operative) and is JUST 40 PAGES LONG!
John Rain and friend, Mossad operative (and lover) Delilah, are eating dinner at “Auberge de la Reine Blanche on the Ile Saint-Louis” in Paris when Rain spots something suspicious. The following quote from the book says it all and pretty soon you’ll find that like the book, the review is over too!
“Dinner for two at Auberge de la Reine Blanche? Eighty Euros. Being underestimated by the punks outside? Priceless”
Rain spots strange characters skulking around and his killer instinct raises the hair on the back of his neck. Sure enough the a fore mentioned strange characters were out to get Delilah. The story, rather shortly and swiftly, describes how Rain and Delilah with their immense field experience dispatch of the would-be killers only to find that although they are safe from the hand of evil, they aren’t really safe from their feelings for each other.
It’s a nice read which probably takes all of 20 minutes. The language is borderline picturesque. The character development is shooed in but is done well enough to give you the bigger picture. I would strongly recommend it to everyone who wants to reclaim their reading habit!
