Health Benefits of Mangoes

We posted couple of mango visual recipes here in last few weeks and hope you relished them.  Do you know apart from their delicious taste, mangoes have many health benefits? We have listed some of the benefits of mangoes and few of the facts might just surprise you !

Improves Digestion: For people suffering from acidity, mangoes are very beneficial.  Its enzymes such as Esters, Terpenes and Aldehydes help to ease indigestion problems.

Lowers Cholesterol:  Mangoes contain high level of soluble dietary fiber, Vitamin C and pectin.  They helps to lower serum cholesterol levels specifically Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) Cholesterol

Boosts Libido and Enhances Sex: Keep aside the Viagra thoughts, go mangoes! The Vitamin E which is present in abundance in mangoes helps to regulate sex hormones and boosts sex drive. In many varieties of mango there is about 2.3 to 3 mg of Vitamin E per mango.

Improves concentration and memory power: Glutamine acid present in mangoes is good source to boost memory and keep the cells active.  So mangoes are useful to children who lack concentration in studies.

For treating Acne: Does acne trouble you persistently? May be you can give your skin a mango therapy. Mango helps in clearing clogged pores that causes acne.  Slice the mango into very thin pieces and keep it on your face for 10 to 15 min and then take bath or wash your face with warm water.

High Iron for women: Mangoes are rich in Iron.  People who suffer from anemia can regularly take mango along with their dinner.  Do you feel weak after menopause? It would be a good idea to take iron rich fruits like

For Diabetes: A widely perceived notion is that diabetic patients should not eat mangoes but it is just a myth. Current studies show mangoes are diabetes fighter.  Even mango leaves are good for fighting diabetes.  Before going to bed put some 10 or 15 mango leaves in warm water and close it with lid. Next day morning filter the water and drink it in empty stomach. Do this regularly. Now it could be one reason, why in Hindu traditions, mango leaves were used in pujas and in Khalas water.

Prevents Cancer and Heart diseases: Antioxidants that is present in high levels in mangoes help in fighting cancer and other heart diseases. It also aids in reducing cholesterol.

Eye health: Vitamin A plays an important role in healthy vision. One cup of sliced mangoes provides us with 25 percent of daily requirement of Vitamin A.  Eating mangoes regularly prevents night blindness, refractive errors, and dryness of the eyes, softening of the cornea, itching and burning in the eyes.

Avoid heat stroke:Aam Panna , the traditional drink made out of unripe mangoes is not only tasty but also helps to maintain our body in hot summers from heat exhaustion. So come summer, sip Aam Panna.

Weight gain: Having said all this, mangoes also adds to our weight. So for those of you who want to put on weight, you can feast upon mangoes and for those fighting weighty issue, go slow on mangoes. A 100 gram of mango contains about 75 calories. Also, raw mangoes contain starch which gets converted into sugar as the fruit ripens. So ripe and sweet mangoes when consumed with milk (rich in protein) can be very helpful in weight gain.
