Bestandworst thumb Best and Worst of Bollywood 2009 Its a mixed bag for Bollywood in the year 2009. The year started with a super flop and ended with a super duper hit. From path breaking movies and some nonsensical movies, the year had its own ups and downs. Here is a list of best and worst movies of Bollywood released in the year 2009. This compilation is based on not just the box office records but also the combination of  critics view, audience reception and my own verdict about the movies.

So here is the movies that made to the GingerChai list of Bollywood 2009 Best and Worst.

Best of Bollywood 2009:

Dev D: A modern day take on the classic Devdas directed by Anurag Kashyap was path breaking for its treatment of the classic film in a contemporary style. It got the accolades of everyone- critics, media and film buffs. A brilliant emosanal attyachar well received.

New York: 2009 saw a couple of movies made on terrorism but only New York pulled out the box office success as well as critical acclamation. This Kabir Khan’s directed movie starring John Abraham, Neil Nitin mukesh and Katrina Kaif was well packaged with good script,  wonderful music and visually appealing cinematography.

Love Aaj Kal: Saif Ali Khan hit jackpot as a debut producer in this movie he starred along with Deepika Padukone and Rishi Kapoor. Thought the movie did not had the charm and magic of director Imitaz Ali’s previous movie Jab We Met, it still managed to strike chord with audience and set the cash counter ringing.

Kaminey: Shahid Kapoor shed his chocolate boy image and sported 6 packs and donned a double role in this movie that also had piggy chops Priyanka Chopra. The movie was both critically acclaimed as well as lauded by audience and almost got a cult status in Bollywood for its bold, dark theme and presentation. Only the Swine Fly scare slowed the box office collection a bit.

Wanted: Very few films prove to be hit in the original as well as in every remakes and Wanted is one among the very few. The remake of the Telugu and Tamil movie “Pokiri” directed by Prabu Deva, making his Bollywood debut as director, smashed the records for this year and gave Salman Khan the much needed big hit to boost his career.

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani: The movie gave overnight stardom to Ranbir Kapoor. The cute pair (RK and Katrina) and their onscreen chemistry gave a fresh grinding for the rumor mills. One of the biggest hit of the year.

Jail: Thought this Madhur Bhandarkar movie did not do very well in box office, it still remains as one of my favorite movie of the year.

De Dana Dan: Critics might have panned it but still it managed a box office hit. I personally liked this typical Priyadarshan’s mindless comedy for its laughter riot from the word go till the end and for the sheer comic timing sense of Akki.

Three Idiots: What a memorable end for year 2009. If the year started with a big flop in CC2C , it ended with this  remarkable, awesome, intelligent movie directed by Rajkumar Hirani. Aamir Khan delivers a historical box office record opening and probably the biggest hit of the year. A must watch brilliant movie.

Worst of Bollywood 2009:

Chandni Chowk To China: No one would have predicted Warner Bro debut into Bollywood to become a waterloo. A forgettable movie that greeted Bollywood 2009 with a disappointed note.

Billu: Khan do it? Not not atleast in this only SRK movie of the year. The movie sank in box office meeting the same fate the Rajni starrer Tamil version of the hit Malayalam movie did.

8 x 10 Tasveer: Nagesh Kukunoor raised his stakes and budget in this Akshay kumar starrer movie but even a public holiday opening could not bring the crowd in to the movie halls and the movie eventually flopped. It was neither a Nagesh’s movie nor Akki’s genre.

Khambakkht Ishq: A nonsensical movie of the year that managed a bumper opening thanks to the hype created by massive promotion and some Hollywood cameos. Pathetic script, horrible screenplay, traumatizing vulgar dialogues all got it critically panned and a nightmare for the lead actors. Bad remake of the Kamal hassan starrer Tamil film “Pammal K Sambandam

Luck: It was no luck for the multi-starrer movie that had Sanjay dutt, Imran Khan, Mithun da along with many others. It also proved a bad luck for the Shruti Hassan, daughter of Kamal Hassan who made her Bollywood debut in this movie.

Dil Bole Hadippa!: A copy of the Hollywood flick “She is the man” DBH signaled the curtains down for the film career of Rani Mukerji. Even the 2009 heartthrob Shahid Kapoor, fresh from the success of Kaminey, could not save the movie.

What’s your Raashee?: Inspired by the DD serial Mr.Yogi , this Ashutosh Gowarikar was a bad rashi for the director this year. After grabbing almost all the awards last year for his film Jodha Akbar, Ashutosh Gowarikar failed miserably even after having piggy chops don 12 different characters.

Blue: Touted as the most expensive Bollywood movie the movie proved to be a mediocre, forgettable movie. What can the Oscar winners A.R Rahman and Resul Pookuty do to a movie that has a powerful cast and technician but a weak script ? So the movie sank into the blue waters of Box office.

Mein Aur Mrs Khanna: Don’t ask me when this Salman khan- Kareena starrer released coz it came and went without any trace.  Came, none saw and sank.

London Dreams: A dream that turned to be nightmare. Vipul Shah dreamt yet another Namastey London and Singh is king but only to give a dud movie. Poor run at box office continues for Ajay Devgan while Salman got this one wrong after his previous hit Wanted.

Aladin: A genie called Actor Amitabh Bachchan could not save this fairy tale movie that was visually appealing, strong appealing characterization in Sanjay Dutt and a debut by Srilankan glam gal Jackqueline Fernandes but drowned by a poor sorry script.

Kurbaan: This K movie produced by Karna Johar was neither a love story nor a path breaking movie. It can easily be put in a formula Kurbaan = Fanaa + NewYork – good script. The real life couple Saifreena could not power this movie inspite of good cinematography and a decent background score.

You got two good choice that could make into the list. ATB did well in box office too but somehow I did not find it to my list. Rocket Singh is an omission, could have been in the list.

As a movie i did not like Paa but If the list was best and worst of Bollywood actors , Definitely Big B would have been on top for his stellar performance in Paa :)
