Avatar-Teaser-Poster

Avatar is a much awaited science fiction film extravaganza directed by James Cameroon. The movie has been released both in 2D and 3D format.

The movie touted as one of the costliest movie brings to you some of the breakthrough technology in film making and animation. It has easily become the most hyped up movie of recent times, so does it match the high level of expectations? lets see.

Year 2154. The humans reaches “Pandora” a earth sized moon of a distant planet. What attracts the humans ? A precious mineral resource in the planet. The planet is lush green with exotic vegetation and inhabited by exotic and dangerous animals and a human like people , the Na’vi. The Na’vis are extremely peace loving people but still formidable warriors who live in sync with the nature. They respect nature and believe the energy is all pervading in all life forms of the planet. The Na’vis are tall in comparison to humans, blue in color and have a tail. The air in the planet is not breathable for human population. Human scientists and armies have set a base colony in the planet and try to colonize the entire planet and subjugate the Na’vis to control the mineral resources. The scientist creates in lab a genetically and physically similar Na’vi bodies called Avatars. Through this body and with human mind they try to infiltrate the Na’vis to know more about them and try to negotiate with them. One of the selected candidate for the science mission is Jake Sully, an US-marine who has lost his leg back in earth. He joins the mission for the sole reason that he may get back his leg in his new Avatar. He joins the Nu’vi plan and wins their heart. Meanwhile the commander of the US army believes in his arm might and bend on teaching the natives a lesson through “shock and awe” military way. So what happens to the Nu’vi ? Did they manage to save their planet? What happens to Jake who is a human in Avatar body? This is what the movie is all about.

When the movie begins you get awed by the planet “Pandora”. The fine details that has gone into the visual effect right from the small plants to the dangerous animals do amazes you. The exotic vegetations, the pre-historic kind creatures , the floating mountains and the flying birds all take you to a completely different fascinating planet. But the interest ends there. Once you settle yourself in the fascinating planet and the visual effect the movie looses the steam. The plot of the movie is not gripping enough to keep you hooked in the seat. At more than 2 and half hours the movie is quiet dragging. The climax of the movie is not dramatically startling. One cannot deny and it is quiet obvious too that lot has gone in terms of money, time, research and effort into the making of the movie but for an average movie-goer the final product is what matters. Did Avatar deliver that ? Not completely. From Indian point of view, you find familiarity right from the movie title “Avatar” to concept of the spirit that shifts from the human body to the Avatar body .. remember the ancient tantric “kudu vitu kudu paithal ” (in tamil)one of the ashta maha siddhi where a human spirit can transfer from one body to another.

The movie draws parallels between the fantasy story and the world we live in. US attack on Iraq and Oil replacing Pandora and minerals in real life. Another correlation can be drawn on how ruthlessly and mindlessly we wipe out the nature and batter Mother Earth.

GingerChai Verdict: Watch it for the hype, the extravaganza tag, for the sheer enormity of planet Pandora but I also warn you that the movie is quiet dragging, bit boring and does not boast of a strong gripping script.

Ha ! I had guessed it. All hyped movies have been big disappointments in last few years except Dark Knight.

I am seeing it today, but yeah, I already know the story and I thought the story was really good. How it comes on screen… remains to be seen by me and me’s wife.

6 hrs to go before the show.

    @ Sambi

Quiet true … The problem is with all the hypes our expectation level zooms skyward and it would be a big task matching the high expectations.

Hype or not… I have two words for the movie.

    Wow. Awesome.

It was worth the wait and watch.

I don’t know about others, but the message from the movie, which has a significance at this time, is very obvious… that life is sacred and everything in this world is interconnected and has an impact on everything else. Expand on it… you get the idea.

    That’s just my opinion.

Couldn’t agree with you more…behind the glitz glamor massive sets there’s a b- grade bollywood masaala story lurking behind.
lesson learn’t- great technology does not equal a great story.

I liked it a lot. And I saw both the 2D and 3D versions and 3D version is waste of money as I did not find much different than 2D.

The movie is good and you dont get bored all along even though it is bit lengthy.

    A must watch.
