Jail is yet another socially relevant and a hard hitting film by Madhur Bhandarkar.

Parag Dixit (Neil Nitin Mukesh) enjoys a successful corporate career and have a lovely air-hostess girl friend Mansi (Mugda Godse). Life seems to be smooth and full of dreams till one incident in his life changes everything. Parag does not know that his room mate, a sales manager is also a  drug peddler. On the fateful night, Parag picks his roommate from his office on the way to their apartment but the narcotics police team stops them. His friend tries to flee and fires at the cops but get shot by the police. Cops arrests Parag and the long ordeal begins. He is remanded to police custody and then judicial custody. The movie shows the life inside the walls. The various stories within the barracks where there is no white, no black but only grey shades. Manoj Bajpai is a murder convict. Whenever Neil breaks down, he keeps telling him not to give up his hope and not loose his mind. After a gripping events and two years, Parag is acquitted from the case and walks out free.

Kudos to Madhur Bhandarkar for a powerful story , script and direction. I would rate this the best movie he has made till date. There is no unnecessary bollywood masalas added. Every characterization sculpted to perfection. No over acting, no screaming, no unwanted sentiments but the movie strikes the right chord with the audience and brings to screen the emotional upheaval of a wrongly accused and the environment within the jail premise . The good, bad and ugly side of the inmates and wardens well scripted and presented. Some people may complain about Neil’s acting. But he does not over-act but gives a controlled acting and the confused and cornered like cat look fits well to the dark subject of the move. The music and songs goes with the flow of the movie.

GingerChai Verdict: A must watch. Highly recommended.

Thanks. Normally don’t watch recent Bollywood movies! I’ll look out for this one! Can we compare ‘Midnight Express’ to this one?
